CSoI undergraduate students Sean Kearney and Cheryl Fonteh, who are in the inaugural class of the CSoI Undergraduate Channels Scholars, received numerous awards this spring in recognition of their academic excellence.

Sean Kearney, who will be graduating from Purdue this semester with degrees in Bioengineering/Math/Statistics, was recognized as Outstanding Senior in College of Science for Statistics as well as the Outstanding Senior in College of Agriculture for Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He was also awarded a prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and will be starting his Ph.D. at Harvard in Systems Biology this fall.

Cheryl Fonteh, who is a bioengineering junior at UCSD, was selected for one of the very competitive Howard Hughes Medical Institute EXROP Scholar awards for 2013. Recipients are matched to HHMI scientist during a 10 week program at the professor's home university, are given a stipend and are eligible for the Gilliam fellowships. As part of the program, she will also be a SURF (summer undergraduate research fellowship) scholar. Cheryl was also a recipient of the Claude Benchimol Scholarship, which is offered by a UCSD bioengineering alumni to financially support five academically excelling undergrad students in the field every year.
