  • Posted in Center News : Monday, April 23, 2012

The Center for Science of Information (CSoI) is pleased to welcome Dr. Rui Ma as one of its Postdoctoral Research Fellows. Rui received a B.S. in Neurobiology and Biophysics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2004. He received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and a M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2008. Having been fascinated with Brain-Computer Interfaces since high school, Rui\u2019s current research interest is to explore the possibilities of Intelligence Augmentation (IA) enabled by novel neuroscience and neurotechnology, via communication paradigms that are organized around feedback information theoretic principles.

As a CSoI Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Rui will be working primarily with Dr. Todd Coleman (UCSD), Dr. Jack Gallant (UC Berkeley), and Dr. Venkat Anantharam (UC Berkeley) on projects involving novel neuroscience experiments and neurotechnology, feedback-information theory, applied probability approaches to optimize feedback information theoretic algorithms, and Brain-Computer Interfaces.

Rui received the Academician He Duo-hui Award from USTC and the "Excellent Teacher Award" from the Department of Psychology at UIUC. He was also a co-author on a paper in Science (August 2011) titled, "Epidermal Electronics", which received press coverage by CNN, the New York Times, and Popular Science. He is a member of IEEE and the Society for Neuroscience.

The Center for Science of Information is an NSF Science and Technology Center headquartered at Purdue University with partners at Bryn Mawr, Howard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Texas A&M, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and the University of Illinois. The Center\u2019s mission is to advance science and technology through a new quantitative understanding of the representation, communication, and processing of information in biological, physical, social, and engineered systems.
