As part of the Pursuing Racial Justice Together series, Purdue's Diversity and Inclusion Office invites Patrisse Cullors to a conversation about "Black Lives Matter".

Cullorsbecame an activist as a teenager, joining the Bus Riders Union, an organization founded in 1994 to combat racial discrimination in the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

For the last 20 years, Cullors has been on the frontlines of criminal justice reform and led Reform LA Jails\u2019 "Yes on R" campaign, a ballot initiative that passed with a 71% landslide victory in March 2020.

Cullors co-founded the Black Lives Matters Global Network movement in 2013 after sparking the viral Twitter hashtag. The movement has since expanded into an international organization with dozens of chapters around the world campaigning against anti-Black racism. Her work for Black Lives Matter received recognition in TIME Magazine\u2019s 2020 100 Women of the Year project.

In addition to authoring the memoir "When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matters Memoir," an instant New York Times bestseller, she also founded the Los Angeles-based grassroots organization Dignity and Power Now. From 2016-2018, she worked as a senior fellow at MomsRising, working on federal legislation that will change the outcomes of maternal mortality, especially in Black women.

Cullors has been honored with various awards including the 2020 Durfee Stanton Fellowship, the 2019 Champion for Peace and Justice from the Trayvon Martin Foundation, The Next Generation Award from ACLU National, The Sydney Peace Prize Award and more.
