CSoI Highlights

  1. The Center for Science of Information (CSoI) invites nominations and applications for its CSoI Postdoctoral Research Fellows program. The program provides opportunities for dynamic individuals to interact with premier research groups and individuals worldwide. Successful candidates are expected to work with Center Researchers at two or more of the participating institutions and serve leadership roles with respect to education and mentoring of graduate students. https://www.soihub.org/news-events.php?id=644

  2. The 2015-2016 Channels Scholars Program is now accepting applications from undergraduates for the competitive Channels Scholars Program. For full consideration, please submit application materials by May 1. For more information about the program and the link to the application, visit https://www.soihub.org/channels-program.php or contact Kelly Andronicos, Director of Diversity, at kandroni@purdue.edu.

  3. The Annual CSoI Summer School will once again be held at UC San Diego and we will partner with the IEEE IT Society Summer School. Dates are August 10 – August 13, 2015. https://www.soihub.org/event.php?id=318

  4. A Call for Papers for a special issue of "Proceedings of IEEE" that the Center is overseeing. Special Issue Editors: Thomas Courtade (UC Berkeley), Ananth Grama (Purdue), Michael Mahoney (UC Berkeley), and Tsachy Weissman (Stanford University). Authors are invited to submit manuscripts presenting recent advances in the core foundations of the Science of Information and its applications to diverse fields, including Economics, Life Sciences, Communication Systems, and Data Analytics. Topics of interest span theoretical foundations (modeling and analysis), algorithms, as well as application studies.   5. The Center’s annual NSF Site Visit will be held on December 8 and 9, 2015 at Purdue University. Please mark your calendars. https://www.soihub.org/event.php?id=319

  6. CSoI will host a Science of Information Day at Princeton on April 20, 2015. More information will be shared soon at https://www.soihub.org/event.php?id=321

  7. CSoI Virtual Brown Bag Presentation,“Analysis of Information Content of Biological Imaging”, April 14, 1:30-2:30. Speakers are Kayal Madhivanan and Swetha Ramadesikan. https://csoi.adobeconnect.com/education

  8. Deepak Kumar gave a presentation on the Science of Information course developed in CSoI (jointly with Mark Ward, Purdue and others) and held an information booth for two hours in the NSF Showcase at the ACM SIGCSE 2015 Conference in Kansas City, MO. March 2015.

  9. The Data Incubator Fellowship is an intensive six-week fellowship that prepares masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for fellows and supported by sponsorships from dozens of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship.   11. The third Workshop on Biological Distributed Algorithms (BDA), will be held at MIT on August 18th and 19th, 2015. We have already secured four exciting speakers and will be adding several more in the coming weeks and months. Similar to last year, we will focus on insects and brains and will have both a contributed track (extended abstracts) and posters.
