CSoI Highlights

  1. Student/Postdoc Workshop - Science of Information for Biological Data - June 22-26 at Purdue University. Registration will be available soon. Center students encouraged to bring a student in biology from your institution to attend together. Some funds for travel reimbursement will be available. The spirit of the workshop is to bring together students and postdocs from multiple fields to lower barriers for understanding the language and approaches across disciplines. Students will gain an understanding of the approaches, methods, and tools of another field of study, while having the opportunity to gain experience working in small interdisciplinary groups focused on cutting edge biology research. Students will be encouraged to work toward potential solutions for data analysis and visualization by the end of the workshop, with opportunities to form working teams with funding from the Center. Example of last year's workshop available here: https://www.soihub.org/events/student-research-workshop.php

  2. The Annual CSoI Summer School will once again be held at UC San Diego and we will partner with the IEEE IT Society Summer School. Dates are August 10 – August 13, 2015. https://www.soihub.org/event.php?id=318

  3. A Call for Papers for a special issue of "Proceedings of IEEE" that the Center is overseeing. Special Issue Editors: Thomas Courtade (UC Berkeley), Ananth Grama (Purdue), Michael Mahoney (UC Berkeley), and Tsachy Weissman (Stanford University). Authors are invited to submit manuscripts presenting recent advances in the core foundations of the Science of Information and its applications to diverse fields, including Economics, Life Sciences, Communication Systems, and Data Analytics. Topics of interest span theoretical foundations (modeling and analysis), algorithms, as well as application studies. Please see link for more detailed information on how to submit, etc. https://www.soihub.org/news-events.php?id=640 Please share this with any of your colleagues you think may be interested.

  4. Congratulations to CSoI faculty members, Bin Yu and Sergio Verdú, for being inducted into The National Academy of Sciences (NAS)! Bin Yu is the Chancellor’s Professor, department of statistics, electrical engineering, and computer science at University of California, Berkeley. Sergio Verdú is the Eugene Higgins Professor of electrical engineering at Princeton University.

  5. Bin Yu, University of California, Berkeley, has been named the 2016 Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) Rietz Lecturer. Her lecture will be July 11-15, 2016 at the World Congress of Probability and Statistics in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

  6. The Department of Statistics congratulates Steve Mussman, a CSoI Channels Scholar who has worked with Purdue faculty member Jennifer Neville. Steve recently received the G.A. Ross Award. The G.A. Ross award is a Purdue University honor granted to each year’s most outstanding senior man decided by a committee of undergraduate peers. It recognizes one graduating male who has outstanding character with a minimum 3.0 graduation index and exudes a commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service.

  9. The third Workshop on Biological Distributed Algorithms (BDA), will be held at MIT on August 18th and 19th, 2015. We have already secured four exciting speakers and will be adding several more in the coming weeks and months. Similar to last year, we will focus on insects and brains and will have both a contributed track (extended abstracts) and posters.
