Despite our understanding and expanding knowledge of the biochemistry of protein expression, there is a lack of quantitative understanding of those processes when novel techniques are introduced. Obtaining a complete and functional picture only through experimental data might prove to be a challenge. Mathematical models can provide fundamental insights into the dynamics of protein expression and offer alternative approaches to incorporate novel experimental aspects into the models, as well as providing a key to understanding the processes and parameters of importance. We will discuss common methods of modeling protein expression and its application in a novel light controlled protein expression system.
