Abstract:
As a painter, artist Ira Greenberg studied nature, visually searching for patterns and forms that he translated into expressive strokes of paint. As a creative coder, he continues to search, but within motifs that extend beyond the physical, natural world. In this talk, Ira will present an overview of his creative journey, visually telling the story of how his medium transmuted from paint to code. He will also feature some of his recent work, including Protobytes (studies in artificial life) and visualization in the digital humanities.

Bio:
With an eclectic background combining elements of painting and programming, Ira Greenberg has been a painter, 2D and 3D animator, print designer, web and interactive designer/developer, programmer, art director, creative director, managing director, art professor, and author. He is also one of the leading experts on the Art and Code movement, a broader effort to bring computers and art together for stunning visual effects that apply in a wide range of academic disciplines, most of them outside of the natural sciences. Ira holds a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Ira is Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he holds a joint position in Meadow School of Art and Lyle School of Engineering and is the Director of a new interdisciplinary media laboratory called the Center of Creative Computation.
